"Dirty Jewess!" This is how my mother was once called as a child. She didn't understand. When she asked her father: "Why do they say that?", he got angry. She didn't understand that either.

"Don't worry about it," he said. My mother felt there was more to it, but she dared not to ask any further. Until grandpa Ivan Charles da Costa suffers a double heart attack and calls his whole family with him and tells his story...

A story that begins in Portugal, with Count Bento (Baruch) da Costa around 1600. About their flight to Amsterdam and Brazil and again to Surinam, where they founded the first Jewish community. But also about their family who were murdered by the Nazis in the Second World War.
