Guest lessons
Why a guest speaker in the classroom?
A guest speaker tells his personal story to students at schools and to adults, such as parents, at institutions or companies. The impact of a personal story, told live, is an indispensable addition to the history method. Interaction and dialogue with the viewer/listener is the guiding principle. But we also want to surprise, emotionalize, chafe, connect or wake up and make others think. The intention of the guest speaker is to let those present think independently about war, prejudice, racism and anti-Semitism. We look for the right guest speaker for every request!
"I find it difficult to tell the history of the Holocaust. I see that a good number of children can imagine little of it. Partly because grandparents are no longer around and little or nothing is said. But I also see that the WW2 and the Holocaust means little to children with other cultural backgrounds.'
‘As a teacher I notice that I sometimes find it difficult to deal with the Middle East conflict. The emotions among my students from vmbo 3 and havo 3 sometimes run high and the nuance is sometimes hard to find. Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia is lurking. I would like to have an open discussion with my students, but how?'

What does the guest lesson consist of?
The guest lecture is a personal story and can – depending on the choice of the guest speaker – be told with the help of media and literary/theatrical/visual/musical elements. This is followed by a discussion in which questions can be asked and discussion can take place. The personal story lasts about 30 minutes. Afterwards, the discussion lasts about 30 minutes, during which a dialogue with the students about prejudice, racism and anti-Semitism takes place.
Target group
The guest lesson is suitable for primary education (groups 7 and 8), secondary education, MBO, HBO, universities and theme meetings.
for whom
Schools
The guest lessons are intended for:
- primary education from groups 7 and 8. A combination group 6/7/8 applies to the Montessori and Jenaplan schools.
- Secondary education all classes
- MBO/HBO/WO
Institutions / government / companies
A personal story as a starting point for a meeting is always possible. Location and setting are flexible. City conversations about anti-Semitism, racism and exclusion work well when a guest speaker tells his or her personal story. The imagination is triggered and creates empathy about the subject. An excellent starting point for a discussion about the above topics! If you would like a moderator, that is also possible.
